Northumbria University Sport, the sport service of Northumbria University at Newcastle, provides facilities and services for students, staff and members of the public on both a membership and casual basis. These Terms and Conditions set out the way in which our services are delivered and what you can expect from us.
In entering into any agreement, you agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions.
1.0 Interpretation
Terms & Conditions means the provisions set out within this document and constitute an agreement between Northumbria University trading as Northumbria University Sport and the purchaser (you).
Northumbria University Sport is the Sport Service of The University of Northumbria University.
2.0 Membership
There are a number of different membership products available for purchase which have various benefits attached to them. The definition of each of the membership products is detailed here.
2.1 Sport Central Smartcard (“mifare card”)
All members require a Smartcard in order to access the facilities at the various sites. Staff and student members of Northumbria University Sport will have their access privileges uploaded to their University of Northumbria at Newcastle Smartcard. Replacement cards must be acquired from Northumbria University Library atthe asociated fee payable in full by the member.
Associate, Public and Concession members will be provided with a Smartcard as part of their membership package which will be uploaded with access rights appropriate to their choice of membership package. There will be an a charge for replacement cards.
2.2 Platinum
Platinum membership includes the following provisions subject to Off Peak and Peak restrictions. A full Fitness Induction, access to the Fitness Centres and the Group Exercise Class programme at both Sport Central & Coach Lane, use of the Sport Central Swimming Pool at any open session, pool based classes, entitlement to discounted Swimming Lessons and Facility Hire charges and Central Climbing membership entitlement. All classes and open sessions are subject to availability. Platinum membership is available on an annual and monthly Direct Debit basis subject to the general conditions set out in this document.
2.3 Complete Fitness & Swim
Complete Fitness & Swim membership includes the following provisions subject to Off Peak and Peak restrictions. A full Fitness Induction, access to the Fitness Centres and the Group Exercise Class programme at both Sport Central & Coach Lane, use of the Sport Central Swimming Pool at any open session, Aqua Fit classes, and entitlement to discounted Swimming Lessons and Facility Hire charges. All classes and open sessions are subject to availability. Complete Fitness & Swim membership is available on an annual and monthly Direct Debit basis.
2.4 Central Fitness
Central Fitness membership includes the following provisions subject to Off Peak and Peak restrictions. A full Fitness Induction, access to the Fitness Centre and Group Exercise Class programme at Sport Central and entitlement to discounted Facility Hire charges. All classes are subject to availability. Central Fitness membership is available on an annual and monthly Direct Debit basis.
2.5 Central Swim
Central Swim membership includes the following provisions subject to Off Peak and Peak restrictions. Use of the Sport Central Swimming Pool at any open session, pool based classes, entitlement to discounted Swimming Lessons and Facility Hire charges. All classes and open sessions are subject to availability. Central Swim membership is available on an annual and monthly Direct Debit basis.
2.6 Central Climb
Central Climb membership includes the following provisions. A Climbing Wall Registration,Satrt Climbing Course, Open Access Climbing sessions and entitlement to discounted Facility Hire charges. Central Climb membership is available on an annual and monthly Direct Debit basis.
2.7 Coach Lane
Coach Lane membership includes the following provisions subject to Off Peak and Peak restrictions. A full Fitness Induction, access to the Fitness Centre and Group Exercise Class programme at Coach Lane ONLY and entitlement to discounted Facility Hire charges across all facilities. All classes are subject to availability. Coach Lane membership is available on an annual and monthly Direct Debit basis
2.8 Team Northumbria
Team Northumbria is the brand name from Northumbria University Sport’s representative sports clubs.
Team Northumbria Membership relates to membership of any one of the sports clubs as detailed by Team Northumbria. These clubs are subject to change at the discretion of the Team Northumbria Manager. Membership is only obtainable upon gaining selection to join a Team Northumbria sports club through the trial process or any other method set out by the Team Northumbria Manager. Provision within both membership types are set out in point 2.8.1 and 2.8.2 for Team Northumbria Membership and Team Northumbria Platinum Membership, respectively. Team Northumbria Membership is only available to current students of Northumbria University or affiliated colleges, except within the National League sports of Basketball, Football, Futsal, Gaelic Football, Netball, Volleyball and Water Polo. Limited non-student memberships are available by invitation within these sports.
Please note, due to the nature of some Team Northumbria Sports Clubs, Team Northumbria Platinum Membership may be mandatory.
2.8.1 Team Northumbria Membership
The Team Northumbria Membership provides:
Access to a minimum provision of one 90 minute coached session for 26 weeks, per sport, as directed by Team Northumbria. Access is granted up to 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow access to changing rooms.
Access to a minimum provision of 2 strength and conditioning sessions per week, per sport, as directed by Team Northumbria.
Off Peak access to the Sport Central and Coach Lane Fitness Centres during BUCS season only. Off Peak access is defined as Monday-Friday 7am-5pm (last swipe 4pm), Saturday after 5pm and all day Sunday. No access will be granted to Sport Central or Coach Lane Fitness Centres until a PAR-Q form has been handed in and an induction successfully completed. Inductions to the Sport Central and Coach Lane Fitness Centres can be completed online or in person, subject to instructor availability.
Off Peak access to the Public Swimming Timetable. Off Peak access is defined as Monday-Friday 7am-5pm (last swipe 4pm), Saturday after 5pm and all day Sunday. Bather load restrictions apply. Access available during BUCS season/term time only.
Member discount on Pay and Play rates, including Group Exercise Classes.
BUCS training, travel and competition entries, where applicable. Subsidised away fixture hotel accommodation (up to £30 per person). Team logistics, planning and development, including Committee Training sessions.
Subsidised physiotherapy sessions with Team Northumbria’s physiotherapy suppliers and access to Sport Science workshops.
This product must be purchased in advance and in full. Access to any other facilities must be obtained through the purchase of a valid membership subscription or facility hire or activity fee, such as for courses. Membership will expire upon completion of BUCS season (may be sport specific), continued access will be available, upon application, via additional payment of advertised Northumbria University Sport membership rates / casual fees.
The cancellation of a Team Northumbria membership will result in the immediate cancellation of any Sports Club membership subscription(s) and provision included within the membership package. Members’ BUCS Card must also be returned to Team Northumbria.
2.8.2 Team Northumbria Platinum Membership
The Team Northumbria Platinum Membership provides:
Access to a minimum provision of one 90 minute coached session for 26 weeks, for up to two sports, as directed by Team Northumbria. Access is granted up to 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow access to changing rooms.
Access to a minimum provision of 2 strength and conditioning sessions per week, per selected sport, as directed by Team Northumbria.
Unrestricted access (subject to availability and opening hours) to the Sport Central and Coach Lane Fitness Centres during the duration that membership is held. No access will be granted to Sport Central or Coach Lane Fitness Centres until a PAR-Q form has been handed in and an induction successfully completed. Inductions to the Sport Central and Coach Lane Fitness Centres can be completed online or in person, subject to instructor availability.
Unrestricted access to the Public Swimming Timetable for the duration that membership is held. Bather load restrictions apply.
Access to the Group Exercise Class Timetable with up to two weeks advanced booking period, subject to point 3.3.
Unrestricted access to the Open Climbing sessions on the Climbing Wall. User level restrictions apply.

This product can be purchased in advance and in full or on a monthly direct debit basis. Membership purchases on a monthly direct debit basis will be charged at the Team Northumbria Platinum level and is subject to a minimum term of six months from the date of purchase. Any other access to the facilities must be obtained through facility hire or activity fee, such as for courses.
The cancellation of, or downgrading from, a Team Northumbria Platinum membership will result in the immediate cancellation of any Sports Club membership subscription(s) initially included within the membership package. Members’ BUCS Card must also be returned to Team Northumbria.
2.9 Student Membership
Student membership is only available to those people who are on a current accredited course by Northumbria University and are registered on the Northumbria University student database.
Northumbria University Student members will default to Public members upon graduating or leaving the University.Graduates of Northumbria University can then apply for an Associate membership according to the terms in point 2.11.
Northumbria Univeirsty Sport is not responsible if a Student member fails to cancel their membership before it defaults to that of a Public member. In this case the member shall assume responsability for the Public rate of payment associated with the membership type originally purchased.
2.10 Staff Membership
Staff membership is only available to people who hold a current contract of employment with Northumbria University and are on the Northumbria University HR database. Once employment is terminated, either by the member of staff or by the university, the benefits of staff membership will be revoked. At this point, a Staff member will revert to the status of a Public member and any existing Direct Debit will be amended accordingly. It is the responsibility of the individual to inform Sport Northumbria if their employment status changes.
Northumbria University Sport will also offer staff a Salary Sacrifice Scheme. To qualify for Salary Sacrifice, you must be paid via the University payroll.
2.11 Associate Membership
Associate membership is available to the following people with the type of proof required in order to qualify for the benefits. This proof of entitlement will be required on your first visit to Sport Central or Coach Lane if purchasing the membership online or at the time of purchase at reception.
All Northumbria University graduates; a degree certificate is required.
Retired member of staff; Contract of employment. If you are no longer in possession of a copy, Northumbria University Sport will request confirmation of your eligibility from our HR Department.
Direct staff family; passports, Drivers Licence, other in date Social Security documentation.
NUS Card Holders; a current National Union of Students photcard
16- 18 Year Old Student Travelcard Holders; a valid bus, metro, train or other public transport provider photocard in date.
2.12 Public Membership and Concessions
Public Membership is available to everyone who does not qualify for a discounted membership group and is subject to the Terms and Conditions outlined in this document. Concessions are available to Under 16’s and Seniors over 60. Photo proof is required that has a Date of Birth listed; accepted methods include passport, driving licence and travelcards.
All members will revert to the Public member classification once their current member classification lapses on the booking system and proof of eligibility will be required in order to change from one classification to another (e.g. Northumbria University Student members will default to Public members upon graduating or leaving the University. Graduates of Northumbria University can then apply for an Associate membership according to the terms in point 2.11).
